The famous cities Locarno and Ascona lie in the very hospitable holiday region of Lake Maggiore, where Latin and German cultures meet. Here is where the Mediterranean region kisses the Swiss Alps. On the lake shore is the new “Lido of Locarno”, bath wellness centre, which you should be sure to visit. For the gamble Fans there is a Casino on the Piazza Grande.
Nestled in an enchanting sunny bay, the village of Ascona is considered the “Pearl of Lake Maggiore”. You will be fascinated by the old part of town with its Piazza and promenade along Lake Maggiore, where you will find elegant boutiques and excellent restaurants and lounge bars.
Whether walking or mountain biking or climbing, the valleys of the region are magnets for visitors. The Verzasca Valley is probably the most visited. The more populous Maggia Valley and its side valleys have even more attractions and enchanting landscapes extending to 3000m peaks. The Valle Onsernone is one of the most impressive and mysterious valleys in Ticino.
Don’t forget to visit exciting Lugano and Bellinzona near Locarno. It is also worth visiting the Italian cities of Verbania/Intra, Luino (weekly market), Varese and Como in the border area.
